Activities
We are staying at a Tudor era Manor farm in the heart of Suffolk, the chocolate box English countryside evoked by Gainsborough. Milden Hall is surrounded by ancient wildflower meadows and offers unique accommodation for groups.
Early arrivals on Friday can have a game of tennis and table tennis at the farm. We can then explore the village (Castle Mound), the Tudor Barn, and try out the cycles (provided for free for all guests).
On Saturday we have two options planned. We are arranging a 9-mile circular walk through the timeless "Wool Towns" of the area. This region was very wealthy in the era prior to the industrial revolution due to its thriving wool industry. Highlight is Lavenham, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England and featured in "Witchfinder General". Walk will also take in scenic villages and undulating Suffolk countryside. Will use the wool town trail quiz provided by the hosts. The second group are using the cycles provided by the venue to explore the wool towns and Suffolk villages. Route is primarily on quiet rural lanes with no hills. We will cycle to the historic town of Hadleigh with its many timbered houses. On to the picture postcard villages of Kersey and Chelsworth with their thatched cottages and impressive churches. We will visit a windmill and vineyard on the route back. In the evening, we plan a barbecue at the farm, and can try out the Tudor costumes if no group has hired out the Tudor barn. Possible wine tasting at the farm's bell tent (to be booked).
On Sunday we can use the sports facilities at the farm. Rounders and croquet equipment provided plus tennis courts to use. We then have two options planned. First a visit to the historic town of Sudbury, the heart of Gainsborough country. We will follow the town trail to visit the Georgian squares, the impressive medieval churches, the mill, and the Gainsborough locations, with pubs and tea shops throughout. Second idea is to visit the nearby steam railway by Wakes Colne on the way back south.
