Activities
For the late May bank holiday weekend, we are staying at Borrowdale hostel in the heart of the Lake District. Borrowdale is a verdant valley of lush meadows and ancient woods of oak and yew trees. It is surrounded by high fells with several Wainwrights to be climbed over the holiday.
Friday: Early arrivals can join us for a stroll along the River Derwent visiting the nearby hamlets. We aim to have evening meal at one of the nearby pubs and hotels.
Saturday: We will lead a challenging 10-mile walk from the hostel to the summit of Scafell Pike. This is the highest mountain in England (3162ft) and has panoramic views in every direction as far as the Isle of Man. We will walk from the hostel via the hamlet of Seathwaite. This route is the most popular one to Scafell. We descend by the "Corridor Route" back to Seathwaite. Other option is a 6-mile Borrowdale walk including an ascent of Castle Crag, the lowest altitude Wainwright (985ft). Lunch stop at Grange village with riverside tea shop and pubs. Route also involves climb onto the "Bowder Stone", the mysterious rock of granite perched on edge and much photographed.
Sunday: Our 9-mile walk starts with a steep ascent of High Spy (2142ft), the first of today's three Wainwrights on the climb. The walk then continues north via Maiden Moor and Cats Bell on a ridge route with superb views over Derwent Water. We then descend to Hawes Launch and bus back to base.
Monday: After checking out of the hostel we travel by bus or car to Keswick. Then options for a ferry ride around Derwent Water with great views of the mountains that surround the lake. Also can hire rowing boats and canoes on the lake. We may adjust itinerary based on weather conditions.
