Activity

Metro-land was the name used to describe the new, picture-perfect suburbs created in NW London and the Chilterns in the Edwardian and interwar periods. Our 7-mile walk will use the Metropolitan railway (which dreamt up the idea and developed the land beside the railway into a "semi-rural arcadia") to explore the history and legacy of Metro-land. We will walk in the footsteps of Betjeman, using his 1973 film "Metro-land" to guide us on our journey. We begin at the HQ of Metro-land, Baker Street, meeting in the same Chiltern Court restaurant where Sir John commenced his film, now Wetherspoons Metropolitan Bar, full of original Metro-land memorabilia. Link below shows the publicity material issued by the railway company to promote the new suburbs. Our walk will take in amongst other features: Wembley's Eiffel Tower, Moor Park, Voseys Art and Crafts ideal home, and how Metro-land evolved. We end the journey where the Met ended, at the Modernist marvel of "High and Over" in Amersham.
