Activity
This 20-mile cycle ride follows the Blackwater estuary in Essex to a sailing resort, then a ferry to Mersea Island and return via timeless Essex villages. We start in Wivenhoe, a scenic harbour on the river which has become an artistic hub. We travel south on quiet lanes to reach the sailing resort of Brightlingsea. Lots of sailing schools use the town due to its sheltered location. We climb on the ferry boat to cross to the beaches of Mersea Island. We will explore the delightful island, its multi-coloured beach huts and endless beaches. At Werst Mersea we will stop for lunch. The oyster stalls serve the local delicacy, Colchester Natives, celebrated since Roman times. We then head north via the causeway to pass through Essex countryside. Detour to Fingrinhoe with its historic Tudor mill and Norman church. Option to extend ride to Colchester from Wivenhoe at end. Ride suitable for all cycles.
