Activity

We will take the Javelin railway from St Pancras for a new coastal walk for the group, a 7-mile walk along the coast via Hastings, St Leonards, the old town and the country park. This walk starts with a tour of St Leonards, the Regency resort created by James and Decimus Burton (the leading Regency and early Victorian architects). St Leonards became very popular with the arrival of the railway in 1845. It retains many features and now has many art shops and pavement cafes. We continue along the sea front esplanade with a visit to the rebuilt pier. Then to the Stade, the unique fishing quarter. Hastings no longer has a harbour, and the fishing fleet is all beach-launched via winches. The fishing market and the huts are all original. We will climb to the castle high up on West Hill. Then the walk will take in the old town with its labyrinth of twittens and courtyards. We climb up the East cliff to the country park with superb views along the coast. Walk will circuit the park before returning via clifftop.
