Activity

Our social day out is to see the Flying Scotsman on the Bluebell Railway. This year is the 100th anniversary of the most famous train in the world, and it is visiting several heritage railways during the year. August sees the Flying Scotsman running non-stop return services between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead on the wonderful Bluebell Railway, in glorious Sussex countryside. We will buy a standard rover ticket to explore the Bluebell Railway and see the Flying Scotsman at the start and finish stations. The train rests at the stations whilst preparing for the next leg, so plenty of time to lean into the footplate for interior views. We will walk along the footpaths alongside the line to catch some great photo opportunities of the Flying Scotsman steaming in front of us. We can visit the perfectly preserved stations on the way (each one has a themed period ranging from Late Victorian to 1950s). We can also visit the loco sheds and carriage sheds to see the heritage fleet. This day sees the Bluebell bring out its late Victorian carriages including the Metropolitan carriages that were used in Metro Land in the 1900s. We are meeting at East Grinstead at 10:20am, however latecomers can meet us later as the Flying Scotsman is running until the evening.

We are taking 9:28am Southern service from Clapham Junction, arrives 10:20am at East Grinstead. Option to take later service and meet us on Bluebell railway. Free parking in nearby streets. Bluebell station is 3 minutes' walk from mainline station.
