Activity

We will take the Javelin railway from St Pancras to visit the unique "end of the world" region of Romney Marsh and Dungeness. Our 6-mile walk will be via the final stations on the delightful Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. This narrow-gauge steam railway has a wonderful collection of locomotives including a scaled model of the "Flying Scotsman". Dungeness is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world and is classified as Britain's only desert. It is of international conservation importance due to the variety of rare birds nesting there and is a photographers dream due to its desolate and bleak beauty. Weathered beach huts and abandoned fishing boats together with the desert are straight out of a John Ford Western. Our walk will take in the beaches, the art studios in the beach huts and the home of Derek Jarman. Time to climb the Old Lighthouse (1760) which is open to visitors to ascend for superb views across the whole peninsula. Finally, the looming nuclear power station dominates the landscape to complete the picture.
