Wine in Beer

Date: Fri-Mon Aug 24th-27th

Organiser: Martina

Cost: Accommodation is £75 (total) per person for the three nights (£10 event surcharge payable by casuals). Deposit of £10 required by March 1st.

Activities: Friday evening - evening meal at hostel, or there are 3 pubs which do food within walking distance (less than 1 mile).
Saturday - we will take a bus from the YHA to Sidmouth (approx 8 miles) and then walk back to the hostel via the beautiful coast. Bring packed lunch / flask. Lots of hills so a reasonable level of fitness and goo dwalking boots are advised. Martina will book dinner in a restaurant in one of the pubs, or self-catering at the hostel.
Sunday - Many activities to do in Beer and the surrounding areas. Martina plans to visit the Pecorama, which is set on the hillside above Beer. It is home to the world's foremost manufacturer of model railway track. There is a famous Model Railway Exhibition, the Beer Heights Light Railway, a 7¼ inch gauge passenger-carrying miniature railway that takes you on a mile-long ride through flower-filled gardens with breathtaking views of Lyme Bay. Cost £8.25 for entry to garden, exhibition and train ride. If it is raining then there is the option of visiting the Quarry caves. They are awe-inspiring caves with their mighty halls of vaulted roofs and pillars of Beer Stone which have been likened to a vast underground cathedral.
Monday morning - 2 mile walk to Seaton where we can go canoeing in the bay. Lunch in Seaton Bay and then home.

Refreshments: Breakfast is included. Meals are available at the hostel, self-catering also possible. Bring packed lunch on day walks. Lots of pubs with food nearby.

Travel: By car: from A3052. At Hangman's Cross turn to Beer onto B3174. At end turn left towards Branscombe, then follow sign. Access road is steep and narrow. Car sharing to be arranged nearer the date. By bus: bus X53 from Beer cross. Links to and from Exeter and Poole. By train: Axminster 7 miles - taxi to hostel, Exeter 30 miles - bus X53 to Beer (1 hour) - 10 minute walk to hostel.

Accommodation: We are staying at YHA Beer which is on the edge of the fishing village of Beer. This light and airy country house, once a smugglers' haunt, has a large lawned garden (address: Bovey Combe, Beer, Seaton, Devon, EX12 3LL).
