Walk Leader Training and Refresher
Date: Sat Feb 7th
Organiser: Steve R
Where: Holmer Green Village Centre, Chadwick Hall, Holmer Green, Bucks, HP15 6XG
Cost: £5 per person (quarterly surcharge payable by casuals)
Activity: This activity is aimed at all members who engage in outdoor activities requiring navigation skills.
In the morning, the training starts with classroom / discussion sessions about walks, navigation, compass, terrain etc. Groups are then formed and each plans a walk from a local OS map. In the afternoon each group goes out and does their walk with each trainee taking it in turns to lead a section. Each group is supervised by an experienced walk leader. A few surprises may be planned during the walks.
The lead trainer, Andrew Zelin, has been leading walks for a range of local Rambling groups, including the Ramblers Association and Youth Hostelling groups for 20 years. He has been working as a voluntary leader for HF Holidays since 1999, which has taken him to the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland, the Peak District and the Isle of Wight. He has a Sliver Level Navigation badge. He has run several successful Leaders Training events for Ramblers Association groups, actively promotes members to lead walks for other walking groups, and is currently Membership Secretary for the Chilterns Weekend Walkers.
All attendees will receive 3 leaflets from Ordnance Survey: Introduction to maps, Map reading made easy, Advanced map reading.
