Thirsty Smiles and a Curry

Date: Sat Jun 18th

Organiser: Steve R

Cost: Free (quarterly surcharge payable by casuals)

Activity: Steve's annual 30 mile walk. Let's hope it's sunny and hot! This year is again a figure of eight, but starting at an end rather than the middle. The route splits neatly into three roughly equal segments. Part 1 is north from Great Missenden to Tring. Part 2 is a circular around Tring. Part 3 is Tring south back to Great Missenden. There is the option for those who want to join for the middle section to meet us at Tring providing you can do a 3+ mph pace. Path wise we'll be walking part of the Chiltern Way. Terrain wise there are some ascents although most of the route is flat. We take in a number of woods. Sight wise, we'll have some quiet rolling hills and walk across, rather than along, some valleys and ridges. And Steve knows that Keith will be disappointed if there won't be a ford for us to cross at the end like last year - so he'll see what he can do. All welcome, but you will need to be reasonably fit and probably have done a few 20 milers beforehand so you know what to expect. There are options to join/depart on route around Tring, although Tring station is a few miles out of the town centre. Steve expects us to be near Tring (town) around 1pm and 5pm. If you're joining us then you need to meet us in Tring station for lunch time as we won't be able to wait. Note that Tring station is not on the same train line as Great Missenden, something to note if you use the two. Bring sun lotion, hat, insect repellent and waterproof (if possibly wet) and other gear as appropriate. And a good pair of walking boots.

Refreshments: Bring full packed lunch, snacks, and water. Steve expects us to stop for 30-40 minutes maximum at Tring, twice, around 1pm and 4:30pm. Tring offers a full range of shops so opportunity to get food and drink. Quick pub or tea shop stop possible too. In the evening, aim is 9pm, Steve will book a table in an Indian or Thai restaurant for those who confirm in advance. No need to attend the walk for this; definites only please. Steve's preference is SukoThai, 50 High Street, Great Missenden, HP16 0A, where he has eaten before a few times.

Travel: Train from Harrow-on-the-Hill to Great Missenden. Check times and weather any track works the week before. Or by car and park (a) in the car park at the start point (£2.70 to park all day) or (b) along a side ride - allow time for this. I would suggest a good free place to park is the London Road, HP16 0DE. From the car park, which will be on your right just after you've departed the A413 from London, go straight on towards the village centre, turn left at the roundabout (i.e. not towards the train station), then continue on out of the village High Street which takes you onto London Road. As you leave the village, there will likely be spaces to park. Allow fifteen minutes to put your boots on and walk back to the start point.

Start: 9:30am prompt at the main car park in Great Missenden, Link Road (A4128), Great Missenden, HP16 9QD

Finish: Around 8:30pm at start point
