Take An Early Bath!

Date: Fri-Sun Feb 19th-21st

Organiser: Genevieve

Cost: Accommodation: £40 for 2 nights; travel: £24.50 (train), £20.90 or £17.80 (coach) (£10 event surcharge payable by casuals). Deposit of £10 payable by end of December.

Activities: Bath is famous for its cultural and historical attractions. There is something for every level of fitness as we have a variety of activities.

  • Jane Austen Walk: a 1.5 hr walk around the city of Bath taking in the literary and historical locations.
  • Bath Walk: taking in Bath Abbey, walk the 212 steps of the tower to view the city skyline, see the Royal Crescent, Circus and the Pulteney Bridge.
  • Prior Park Landscaped Gardens: beautiful sweeping gardens designed by Alexander Pope and Capability Brown, palladian bridge, free to National Trust members.
  • Cycle Ride: There is the option of hiring a bike from Bath and Dundas Canal Co. £14 per day. The towpaths between Bristol and Bradford upon Avon can be explored.
  • Roman Baths: Visit the heart of the World Heritage Site. Around Britain's only hot spring, the Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex that still flows with natural hot water. See the water's source and walk where Romans walked on the ancient stone pavements around the steaming pool. £11.50.
  • Thermae Bath Spa: Using the warm, mineral-rich waters which the Celts and Romans enjoyed over 2000 years ago, Thermae Bath Spa is Britain's original and only natural thermal Spa. Choose a 2-hour or 4-hour spa session which includes full access to the warm waters and flowing curves of the Minerva Bath, a series of aromatic steam rooms and the open-air rooftop pool with spectacular views across the skyline of Bath. £22.00 for 2 hours.
  • William Hershel Museum: the International Year of Astronomy continues as the museum features some contributions of astronomers.
  • Shakespeare Festival: starts 20th February at the Theatre Royal.

Refreshments: Breakfast can be ordered from the Youth Hostel at an extra cost or self catering available. Bath has an abundance of cafes. Sally Lun's teashop is of particular note as it is the oldest house in Bath. Restaurant meal in the evening.

Travel: Train: from Paddington to Bath Spa - 1.5 hr journey. £24.50 if booked early enough. Coach: from Victoria/Earls Court/Heathrow to Bath Spa or Bath University - 3 to 4 hour journey. £20.20 (refundable) or £17.80 (non-refundable). Car sharing to be organised nearer the time.

Accommodation: We have booked 4 male and 4 female shared dorms in the pretty, older part of Bath YHA. It has been described as an "Italianate mansion situated just one mile from the centre of Bath". Address: Bathwick Hill, Bath, Somerset, BA2 6JZ.
