Roman Coast to Coast Walk
Date: Mon-Sun Apr 5th-11th
Organiser: Keith
Cost: £161.00 per person covers cost of all accommodation. If we don't leapfrog with cars and you don't want to carry all your gear on your back along the wall, baggage transfer is available at a cost of approx £5 per bag per transfer. 4 male and 2 female places available to be allocated on first come first served basis - on receipt of full payment. Keith may be able to provide additional spaces but dependent upon room availability there may be additional cost. Alternatively after spaces are filled Keith will provide a list of locations at which we are staying and you can make your own accommodation arrangements (£10 event surcharge payable by casuals).
Activities: We shall be walking the length of the Hadrian's Wall Path travelling east to west, ironically starting at Wallsend on the river Tyne near Newcastle. Walking approximately 84 miles to our destination at Bowness on Solway. The aim of the event is to walk the entire length of the wall but there is a good bus service along the route of the wall should anyone be unable to cope with the daily demand of walks averaging 15 miles per day (longest is 18 miles). Much of the first day takes us through urban areas of Newcastle but the rest of the walk is in open country. The most spectacular areas we are walking will be encountered between Chollerford and Gilsland on the Wednesday and Thursday but the other areas have much to offer
Refreshments: Breakfast included except at the Youth Hostel where we are staying on Wednesday night. Most venues can provide packed lunch for additional charge. Venues for Monday to Wednesday have self-catering facilities. Variety of pubs etc. near venues for evening meals.
Travel: Frequent trains from Kings Cross to Newcastle but it is far cheaper to travel by train from London to Carlisle and then take a train across country to Newcastle. Check National Rail website for details. Those going from the Durham event can get a train to Newcastle for less than £4. Newcastle Metro system will take you to start point. Those wishing to travel by car can drive them to first nights' venue and leave them there for the week for £10.00 (travelling into Newcastle by bus, train or taxi) and get train or bus back from Carlisle to collect. Car sharing may be possible but cannnot be guaranteed.
Accommodation: Varied - bunkhouses, youth hostel and B&B. Breakfast included. The walk ends on Saturday but due to travelling distances involved, Keith has booked accommodation in Carlisle for the Saturday to allow a more leisurely trip home on the Sunday.
