Rambles in the Shambles

Cost: Accommodation is £34 (total) per person (half board) (£10 event surcharge payable by casuals). Deposit of £10 required by Dec 25th.
Activities: We are staying in the histoic city of York by the River Ouse surrounded by cultural activities and places to explore. York was settled by Vikings which will be outlined at the YORVIK York exhibition. There are day tours around York city centre and the choice of taking a free tour of the city walls which can be 'brass rubbed' to make a mural. In addition, possible activities include York Castle Museum (£8.50 adults) this includes entrance to the York Prison Museum. You might find the Yorkshire Museum and Gardens more appealing. The museum is £7.50 (adults) this includes access to the York Castle Museum too or you may prefer to visit the Gardens alone, there is also an observatory which will be open while we are there. The gardens and observatory are free. York being York, there is a Richard III Museum (£2.50 adults). If you are a National Trust member you may like to visit the Treasurer's House, basic entrance is £6.30 (adults). Extra tours of the attic and cellar are chargable to National Trust members. There are also optional extras of a visit to the National Railway Museum which has two special exhibitions on at the time of our visit 'Fear and Fascination' and 'A Centenary Celebration'. Or maybe you would prefer to visit Howard's Castle taking in the art at York St Mary's. Walking around the city takes in a gentle pace - 2 mph. General fitness required. Bring comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for all possible weathers (it is February after all).
Refreshments: The hostel provides breakfast and a second meal. You can still supplement this with self-catering provisions for packed lunch or snacks. There are plenty of cafes, eateries and pubs in the town. We have the option of taking part in 'Dine About' where we take a tour of 4 of York's restaurants, approx cost £27
Travel: Trains from Kings Cross to York take between 1 hour 50 minutes and 2 hours 20 minutes, no changes. Over the counter tickets currently cost £29.50 each way. Advance tickets can be bought from thetrainline.com from as little as £19.00=Kings Cross to York and between £14.60 and £22.00 depending on nominated time of travel. If travelling by car allow at least 4 hours, journey distance is approximately 200 miles. Car sharing can be arranged between those going nearer the time.
Accommodation: YHA York, 42 Water End, Clifton, York, North Yorkshire, YO30 6LP. We have 2 rooms of 4 booked (4 male / 4 female). This is a large Victorian house near the River Ouse with garden, luggage store, WiFi, laundry, restaurant and self-catering facilites. Yorkshire Pass can be booked through the hostel to give you money off various attractions in York.
